How BAH works
BAH covers part of the cost of renting off-base housing in the 50 states when government housing is not provided. DTMO sets a rate for each Military Housing Area, pay grade and dependency status, based on local rental costs. Rates are published once a year but can change mid-year: the Abilene, TX / Dyess AFB area (TX270) received a temporary increase effective May 16, 2026, which this calculator includes.

Frequently asked questions
- Which ZIP code should I enter?
- Enter the ZIP code of your permanent duty station. DTMO bases BAH on pay grade, dependency status and permanent duty station ZIP code, not on where you choose to live.
- Why does my LES show a different BAH?
- Your LES can differ because of rate protection after a BAH decrease, a recent move or promotion, partial BAH, or special housing situations. Check with your finance office if the amount looks wrong.
- Does this calculator include taxes?
- No. It shows gross amounts before taxes and deductions such as TSP contributions and SGLI.
- What if my ZIP code is outside the 50 states?
- Locations outside the 50 states, including U.S. territories, use overseas housing (OHA) and cost-of-living (COLA) rules instead of BAH. The calculator tells you when a ZIP code is not in a BAH housing area.
